Couples work

Every couple deserves deep emotional connection

Most couples aren't short on love. They're short on ways to reach each other when stress, busy schedules, kids and careers get in the way.

Couples coaching with Alexandra Mackey, MA, LPC, CMNCS, brings both partners into the room to build the relationship you want going forward. It's practical and future-focused: better communication, calmer conflict, a fairer split of the load and a shared plan for your family, your work and your life together.

Alexandra is a retired licensed professional counselor who brings that clinical depth into her coaching. Coaching lets her get inside a relationship in a deeper, more actionable way: less talking about the problem, more practicing what changes it. As a wife and mother herself, she understands both the emotional side of partnership and the day-to-day reality of running a household and careers at the same time. Sessions are available at our North Central Phoenix office or by Zoom anywhere in the United States.

When couples reach out

Couples coaching can help when you're facing

  • The same arguments over and over, with no resolution
  • Feeling more like roommates or co-managers than partners
  • Communication that turns into criticism, defensiveness or silence
  • An uneven mental load and resentment about who does what
  • Different parenting styles pulling you apart
  • Stress from careers, money, a business or a growing family
  • Big transitions: a new baby, a move, a career change, an empty nest
  • Wanting to strengthen a good relationship before life gets busier

How couples coaching works

What to expect

Structured, collaborative and focused on change you can feel at home, not just in the session.

  1. Apply

A short application, then a strategy call to make sure couples coaching is the right fit for you both.

  2. Your shared vision

Clarify what you each want, what's working and the patterns that keep repeating.

  3. Skill-building

Learn to slow down conflict, listen without defending and ask for what you need in a way your partner can hear.

  4. Teamwork

Build systems for parenting, the mental load, money and time together that hold up in real life.

Approach

Emotional intelligence for two

Couples coaching draws on emotional intelligence, emotion regulation and attachment-informed understanding. When conflict feels unsafe, the body shifts into fight, flight or shutdown, and productive conversation becomes impossible. Learning to recognize and calm those responses, including with simple breathwork, is often the turning point for couples.

Parenting as a team

Many couples come in because parenting has become a source of tension. Coaching helps you agree on your values, support each other in the hard moments and present a united front, especially when one of you is a stay-at-home parent carrying a heavy load. See also parenting & relationship coaching.

Is couples coaching only for couples in crisis?

No. Many couples come to strengthen a good relationship before a big transition, such as marriage, a first child or a business launch.

Couples coaching or couples therapy?

Coaching is forward-focused and builds skills for communication, teamwork and connection. It doesn't treat mental health conditions.

If one or both partners are dealing with trauma, depression or anxiety, individual therapy for Arizona residents may also help.
